That was fun. That was different.

We had a great group today. Eight wonderful seniors all seated in a circle. We watched the DVD that I brought along with the old TV commercials for cigars, washing machines, Halo shampoo, VEL dishwashing detergent and Hertz rental cars. Their eyes were glued to the screen – all of the old hairdos, outfits, old cars and 1950’s living room furniture. Then, I led a discussion – stuff  they hadn’t discussed in years and they had lots of opinions and feelings to share. Some of my questions:

HOW DID YOU DEAL WITH UNCERTAINTY IN YOUR LIFE?

DID A FAMILY MEMBER EVER HAVE CANCER? HOW DID YOUR FAMILY COPE?

HOW DID YOUR FAMILY COPE WHEN TROUBLE CAME YOUR WAY?

IF YOU WERE RAISING KIDS TODAY, WHAT WOULD YOU DO DIFFERENTLY?

The hour flew by very quickly and everyone lingered around still talking as I was packing up my things. One man, who was very hunched over, on his walker said to the other lady walking next to him. That was fun. It was different. I sure learned a lot about the people I live with here. I didn’t know much about anyone. It was interesting to hear about their backgrounds.

I love doing this!
