My name is Sierra – like the mountain range

A visit with a 94-year-old lady at the independent facility today:

I grew up in Mississippi which was the state that treated the slaves the most cruelly. I was born in 1918. I went to college and got my degree. I joined the Army and then went into the Air Force. Even though, I had a college degree, the Air Force would not accept an African American woman. They only accepted African American men for the Tuskegee unit. They sent me for typing. Here is my picture when I finally got accepted into the Air Force. Can you imagine that? Not taking me. Not wanting me. Not caring about my goals – because of the color of my skin.
